The Basics: A Stripped-Down Skincare Routine

We at YB HQ definitely know how overwhelming it can be to choose what’s right for your skin. Picking products can be a reaaal task but don’t worry, we are here to guide you!

No matter what your skin type, there is a basic routine for our busy go getters that can be followed to give your skin some lovin’ without the lengthy steps if you’re short on time. Keep reading to find out about some of our favorite basic you can grab, what they’re good for and how to use them for the best results.

STEP 1:

Oil Cleanser *optional but recommended*

You might be freaking out thinking “what?? oil cleanser? I already have oily skin!” Don’t fret. Oil cleansers are great for literally all skin types and if you wear makeup it’s definitely a step you don’t want to skip. Oil attracts oil so using a suitable one will help get rid of excess oil, dirt and impurities from the day. We recommend the Erborian solid oil cleanser, this baby is a skin expert favorite because it melts off even the most stubborn makeup. If you add a bit of water too, it’ll transform into a milky texture leaving your skin feeling super clean! Looove. It’s always good to make sure your face is cleansed to perfection before you disconnect for the night, so you can even double cleanse when you’re not wearing makeup.

STEP 2:

Cleanser

Right after you have successfully oil cleansed, you’ll want to make sure you’ve gotten rid of every trace of makeup with a gel/foam/milky/cream cleanser – depending on your skin type of course. For our oily skin sisters, a gel or foaming cleanser is your best bet because it will clean your skin without the oily residue. For skin that’s on the dry-sensitive side we recommend a cream cleanser to rehydrate, nourish and soothe your skin. If you’ve got normal-combination skin, you can use a foaming cleanser to maintain balanced skin.

Here are our skin experts’ recommendations:

Gel cleanser – Malin + Goetz Grapefruit Cleanser

Cream cleanser – Mad Hippie Cream Cleanser

Foam cleanser – Erborian Double Mousse

STEP 3:

Toner

Toners can be used as an EXTRA extra step to finally remove alllll the residue from your skin but it’s mainly to balance your skin’s pH level, which can improve oiliness, or dryness (again, depending on your skin and the toner) to reveal smoother, brighter, clearer skin. Toners also help to calm your skin and prep it for the rest of your skincare routine.

Here are some of our recommendations:

For dry skin – COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence

For oily skin – Elemis Balancing Lavender Toner

For combination skin - REN AHA

For normal skin: The Ordinary Lactic Acid

STEP 4:

Targeted Serum

It’s important to know which serum is meant for your skin type because what works for your friends might not work for you. Targeted serums help address specific skin concerns, and some can address more than one concern at a time. There’s one for us all!

Here are some of our recommendations:

For dry skin – Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Hyaluronic Essence

For oily skin – The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

For combination skin – Revolution Skincare 2% Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Serum

For normal skin: Malin + Goetz Replenishing Face Serum

For mature skin: DERMAdoctor Wrinkle Revenge Ultimate Hyaluronic Serum

For sensitive skin: Dr. Barbara Sturm Calming Serum

STEP 5:

Moisturizer

Using a face moisturizer every day and night is one of the best ways to achieve glowing skin! They are basically an emulsion of oil and water and other super important ingredients to keep your skin happy. Moisturizing protects your skin’s barrier which in turn protects your skin from redness, dark sports, fine lines, wrinkles etc. Even if your skin is oily, a hydrating moisturizer is essential. To make your life easier, for daytime you can opt for a moisturizer which includes SPF so you have one less step in your routine.

Here are some of our recommendations:

For dry skin – Embryolisse Filaderme Emulsion

For oily skin – L’Occitane Aqua Réotier Ultra Thirst Quenching Gel

For combination skin – Erborian Bamboo Frappe

For normal skin - Haruharu Wonder Hyaluronic Cream

STEP 6:

SPF

SPF is a must in your skincare routine! Just make sure it’s the right one for your skin type because it’s going to be the last step of your routine. SPF shields you from harmful UVA/UVB rays which cause premature aging and sun damage. Don’t forget to make sure the sunscreen you use offers broad spectrum protection!

Here are some of our recommendations:

For dry skin – Davines SU Protective Cream SPF 30

For oily skin – Glossier Invisible Shield

For combination skin – Sun Bum Clear Face SPF

For normal skin - Mario Badescu Oil Free Moisturizer (with SPF 30)

As you can see, you don’t have to have a complicated 23 step routine. If you have these basic steps down, you’re good to go!
