You all know how important SPF is by now because we never stop talking about it. But how does one choose the right sunscreen? We gotchu!
Here are 3 tips to remember when choosing a sunscreen:
The SPF should mention ‘broad spectrum’ protection. This means it protects your skin from both UVA and UVB rays which is very important because both of these rays contribute to skin cancer and premature aging. Without broad spectrum protection your skin is only protected from sunburn and not harmful sun rays.
Make sure your sunscreen is SPF 30 or more. SPF 30 filters out about 97% of the harmful rays. SPF 15 and below won’t protect you from skin cancer or aging.
Pick one that is water resistant or very water resistant for between 40-80 minutes. This does not mean your sunscreen is waterPROOF so you will have to reapply every 2 hours or after swimming/sweating.
Now you need to decide whether your sunscreen is meant for your skin type.
For oily skin types:
Opt for a non-comedogenic, water-based, gel sunscreens for acne prone skin as well. Your best bet would be to pick a moisturizer + SPF combo especially during summer to keep things lightweight.
For dry skin types:
Pick a mineral oil-based sunscreen with hydrating benefits to keep your skin nourished and happy. This works for normal-combination skin as well!
Skincare is all about trial and error so don’t worry if the first product you buy doesn’t work for you. Follow the above steps and you’ll be on your way to finding your perfect sunscreen!
