Dealing with Maskne

It looks like we will be wearing face masks for a while and we know how frustrating ‘maskne’ is. Even with the best skincare routine in place, you can still have some irritation caused by the friction of wearing a mask all day long. The trapped heat and moisture create the perfect environment for bacteria which then leads to acne, blemishes, redness, irritation etc. Lovely!
Unfortunately, there’s no way around wearing a mask but don’t worry because there are ways to treat and prevent maskne.
First off, if you are using a single use mask, you should make sure you change it often during the day. This means you are keeping extra safe plus keeping your skin happy with a clean mask. If you’re using a reusable mask, make sure to wash it every. single. day. You don’t want to be wearing a dirty mask two days in a row – otherwise, hello acne.
Go about your skincare routine as you usually would but just make sure to regularly wash your face with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, sans the harsh ingredients. Your best bet would be a cleanser with salicylic acid to fight the acne causing bacteria. Remember to wash your face once in the morning, then in the evening before bed and anytime you feel like you have sweat a lot during the day. When drying you skin, pat dry gently to avoid further irritation.
A good next step would be a toner to calm and soothe your skin. Think REN AHA, which is super gentle but works hard to rid your skin of impurities, unclogs your pores, and reveals smooth, clear skin.
Next would be to follow with a non-comedogenic moisturizer, and if you have oily skin, something which is oil free would work best!
We hate to say it, but if you cut back on the makeup this will help get rid of maskne quicker too since your pores will be able to breathe under your mask. We recommend using the bare minimum - think concealer, some eyeliner and mascara.
Wear your mask, cleanse your skin and be safe!
